‘World of Dance’ Judges Jennifer Lopez And Derek Hough Got Into A MAJOR Debate Last Night
World of Dance continued last night with the final episode of the Qualifiers round before contestants move on to the Duels. While last nights episode was full of jaw-dropping performances, as per usual, a key moment came near the end, when things got a bit, um, heated between judges Jennifer Lopez and Derek Hough .
In case you missed it, Radiance, an all-female group of 13 contemporary dancers from Los Angeles, was the final performance of the show, competing in the Upper Team division .
The judges were clearly impressed by their routine (they gave them an average score of 88, after all), but J.Lo stressed the importance of all performances telling a story (after the dancers had initially said their routine wasnt really about anything). "Weve got to feel something, and this audience has to connect to you," she told Radiance.
Derek responded immediately, saying he respected the fact that the dancers were upfront about the fact that there wasnt really a story, saying he didnt think it was always necessary. Still, he cheekily reminded the dancers to think of the audience theyre performing for, saying, "She loves a story," motioning toward J.Lo.
Jennifers facial expression and "hmm" response to Dereks comments was pretty telling, hinting that this will probably come up again throughout the competition. On World of Dance, the contestants personal narratives often do come into play and are a pretty big part of the show as a whole, so J.Lo maintained that its not about her, but about "them" (the audience). Case in point:"If theyre not getting anything from it, thats a problem," she said.
Derek agreed, but also brought up the fact that if a dancer's gonna tell a story, it needs to be genuine because the judges can tell when performers try to present a story that isnt authentic.
