The government has changed its position on the legality of the NASA anti-IEBC protests, just a day after President Uhuru Kenyatta gave a go-ahead.

Through the Nairobi Police Commander Japheth Koome the government declared the protests illegal and urged the opposition to keep off from the premises of Anniversary Towers.

Immediately after Koome’s statement, tear gas was lodged against protesters who had camped at University way.

The Police also cordoned off the IEBC offices but have allowed protesters to demonstrate on other streets.

This is a sharp contradiction to an earlier statement by ODM chairman John Mbadi’s statement who said that they had informed the Police that they were going to demonstrate.

It is also not clear how the demonstration were declared illegal since President Uhuru Kenyatta had on Monday stated that if the NASA coalition staged peaceful protests, they would be given adequate security.
