The two, 47-year-old Joseph Kamundi and a seven-year-old boy Paul Mutwiri from Riamikui village in Tharaka North Sub County, died while another, Daniel Murithi is still fighting for his life at the Meru Teaching and Referral Hospital.

Daniel Murithi is the brother to deceased Paul Mutwiri.

Witnesses report that Joseph Kamundi had gone to gather the honey in the morning and had come back with it in the evening.

He then went on to share the honey with the two brothers, after finding them in his homestead. The two boys were his neighbor’s children.

Soon after consuming the honey, one of the boy’s relatives identified as John Kirimi reported that they started experiencing stomach aches.

“They all started vomiting and that’s when we rushed them to Mukothima Health Center for treatment,” he was quoted by The Standard.

Kamundi and Mutwiri died on arrival.

Confirming the incident was Ntoroni Assistant Chief Japhet Muthengi warning residents of the village to avoid consuming food without knowing it’s origin.

“We should always be very careful with what we consume,” he said.
