DCI opens special unit for children

The first Child Protection Unit which will be dealing with culprits of child abuse and exploitation has been opened in Nairobi.

This unit is the first of it's kind to be opened in Africa in an event presided over by British High Commissioner Nic Hailey.

The unit will ensure that child abusers are monitored, culprits arrested and children rescued.

It will be equipped with modern technology which will assist in collecting evidence for successful investigations and prosecution of child abusers. 

Increase of cases

Speaking at the event on Monday, Amb Hailey assured Kenya of UK’s commitment in the protection of children.

Hailey said even if abusers of children come from his country, he will make sure they face the full force of law.

This comes in the backdrop of a feature which aired on NTV on Sunday night showing the plight of young children who were preyed on by an American Gregory Dow, who was a registered child offender.

FBI probes Americans

Director of Criminal Investigations George Kinoti who was present at the opening of the unit stated that it was a major milestone in protecting children who are most vulnerable in the country.

Meanwhile, the FBI is investigating the American couple which set up a children's home only for them to abuse the minors and run away.

The investigations are to establish if Gregory Dow and his wife Mary Rose — residents of Lancaster — molested those in their care at a children’s home in Boito, Bomet County.

A warrant of arrest has been issued against the two who left Kenya in 2017.
