The 21-year-old eventually signed a staggering 10-year deal running until 2035, making him the club’s highest-paid player and increasing his release clause from €58 million to €100 million.

Dressing Room Resentment Over Nico Williams’ Extemoraneous Wages

The new contract has not gone down well with some senior players. Defenders Dani Vivian and midfielder Oihan Sancet — both central to Ernesto Valverde’s system — reportedly feel they should be on similar wages, given their importance to the team.

Tensions have been compounded by the perception that Williams receives special treatment at the club. Despite his lucrative deal, the Spanish international recorded a modest return of just 10 goal involvements in 29 La Liga games last season.

Williams missed 10 matches through a series of minor injuries, further frustrating colleagues. Off the pitch, his “very intense nightlife” has also drawn criticism, with some questioning his professionalism and commitment.

Failed Barcelona Move Adds Fuel to Fire

The winger’s near-move to Barcelona intensified speculation about his future. Those close to Williams claimed he feared Barça would be unable to register him due to financial constraints.

However, club president Joan Laporta later revealed the Catalans’ priority was to secure a loan for Manchester United’s Marcus Rashford instead.

The internal discontent comes in the wake of Bilbao’s disappointing 3-0 defeat to Arsenal at the Emirates Stadium last Saturday., adding pressure on Valverde to restore unity in the squad as the new season approaches.
