The Truth on Raila’s Private Meeting with Maraga

A photo of Chief Justice David Maraga enjoying a cordial moment with NASA leaders led by Raila Odinga has in the past few days caused controversy among a section of online users.

In the wake of the decision by the Maraga-led court to nullify the Presidential election,  the photo has been widely shared on social media platforms particularly by Jubilee- sympathetic users.

A majority of those who have shared the image have incorrectly suggested that the photo was taken during this year’s election season, with propagandists going to the extent of suggesting that the honourable Chief Justice was watching the streaming of Presidential results in the company of NASA principals.

Pulse Live Kenya, however, can authoritatively confirm that the private meeting between the Chief Justice and the NASA presidential candidate took place in November 2016 and was widely covered by the local press.

Odinga paid a courtesy call to the Chief Justice a few weeks after the celebrated judge was appointed to replace Willy Mutunga.

“We discussed the need to continue with reforms in the judiciary with a view to an effective and efficient system of justice,” Odinga stated while commenting on the meeting.

As part of settling in his new office, Maraga also met numerous other leaders including the speakers of both parliaments among other government officials.
