He added that his ministry was in the process of withdrawing all licensed guns with the aim of issuing new ones once a new board has been set up.

"I have disbanded the Firearms Licensing and Control Board with the aim of reconstituting a new one. We are in the process of reverting all Firearms in the view of security and safety," Matiang'i said while addressing an orientation meeting for new board members of the Independent Police Oversight Authority (IPOA).

The CS issued the order following numerous instances of firearms being given without proper background checks.

Several licensed gun owners have been accused of poor handling of weapons.

The most recent case was that of Migori Governor Okoth Obado who was found in possession eight firearms, some of them said to be unlicensed.

Businessman Jimi Wanjigi has an existing case after police found several high-level weapons in his houses.
