Kenya Police using excessive force

The National Police Service has recently been on the spot over use of excessive force when dealing with civilians.

While the Internal Affairs Unit (IAU) and other institutions such as the National Police Service Commission (NPSC) and the Independent Police Oversight Authority (IPOA) are charged with investigating instances of alleged police brutality, victims are required to file a complaint and record a statement before action is taken.

Recently, members of the public condemned police actions at Jomo Kenyatta University of Agriculture and Technology (JKUAT) after video footage emerged of a group of four officers beating up a student.

The student, Allan Omondi, later recorded a statement and indicated that he was afraid of going back to school after the incident.

IAU is yet to reveal their findings on the matter after three of the officers in the video were suspended.
