Captain Marvel Makes History in its Opening Weekend
While certain moviegoers stated that they would be boycotting Captain Marvel, the numbers really do speak for themselves. "Marvel Studios once again proves that stories combining diverse perspectives and different experiences make great movies that play to everybody. People crave representation," says Disney distribution chief Cathleen Taff. "Higher, further, faster, baby."
This is also the second biggest opening for a comic book movie, after last years Avengers: Infinity War, which made $640.5 million. Infinity War was the culmination of a decade of world-building, bringing together a vast call-sheet of super-powered soldiers, sorcerers and spies in an epic battle for the fate of the universe.
Captain Marvel, meanwhile, took a step away from the current MCU timeline to give us a solo adventure that was part prequel and part origin story, complete with nineties music and fashion, and a refreshingly different take on the character of Nick Fury by Samuel L. Jackson.
That Captain Marvel has been such a box office hit, surpassing even Gal Gadots star-making turn in 2017s Wonder Woman, should put paid to any doubts that tent-pole movies starring women dont make money. And with Brie Larsons Danvers joining the rest of the Avengers next month, its safe to assume that Endgame will continue this trend of breaking box office records.
