In the personalized message received by the 400,000 defaulters, KRA has warned that failure to pay the Sh2,000 penalty fee before July 30 will attract punitive measures.

Among the measures KRA is likely to take is the deactivation of the defaulter's PIN number which will affect the processing of their monthly salaries.

KRA allowed by law to make deductions on defaulter's salary

In addition, Tax Procedures Act of 2015 gives KRA the authority to recover the penalty fee from the individual's salary with cooperation from employers.

"Under subsection (2) requires an agent to deduct a specified amount from a payment of a salary, wages or other similar remuneration payable at fixed intervals to the taxpayer.

"The amount required to be deducted by an agent from each payment shall not exceed twenty percent of the amount of each payment of salary, wages or other remuneration (after the payment of income tax)," the law outlines.
