Uhuru, Ruto's salaries to be increased

President Uhuru Kenyatta and Deputy President William Ruto will get a pay rise after the Treasury budgeted for a 3.9 percent increase.

This comes two years after their salaries were cut in 2017.

According to the Daily Nation, Treasury documents showed that the combined annual pay of President Kenyatta and Dr Ruto will rise from Ksh36.6 million to Ksh38 million.

Treasury documents indicated that the two will enjoy a combined allowances package of Sh15.2 million in the year starting July.

At 3.9 per cent, the presidency pay rise is unlikely to match the average inflation for this year, targeted at above five percent, up from 4.3 percent a year earlier.

The two top public executives saw their pay, together with other top officials,’ cut ahead of the general elections on August 8 to curb the ballooning wage bill.

Uhuru supports pay cut

When the President ordered for the pay cut it saved the taxpayer Ksh70 million in public wage bill. 

In March President Kenyatta endorsed a bid by the SRC to scrap some public service allowances, saying it could help meet one of the African Union’s recommendations on good governance.

President Kenyatta had said that reducing the wage bill, was an attempt that he failed in the past, remains his goal.

"I want to make it clear, I fully support the guidelines issued by the Salaries and Remuneration Commission (SRC) on salary scales for the Public and State Officers. The Commission’s efforts will help in containing the public wage bill,” the President said.
