Gov't announces new opening dates for schools

The Ministry of Education has announced new opening dates for schools to allow the census to be conducted.

A circular released to Regional Directors of Education outlined that the schools will be reopened on September 2, 2019 and not on August 26, 2019 as earlier announced.

The schools will then close on October 25, 2019.

"For the forthcoming census to be successful, it is the desire of the Kenya National Bureau of Statistics that there be minimum movements of the population so that they may get as many people as possible in conventional households," the circular read in part.

Letter to Prof. George Magoha

KNBS had written to Education CS George Magoha requesting to have the dates changed to accommodate the national census that will begin on August 24 and end on August 31.

"We are in close consultation with the Ministry of Education on how best the exercise should be conducted, to ensure everyone is captured," KNBS Director General Zachary Mwangi conveyed.

The census will be conducted over one week in an exercise that will be digitized.
