A study has revealed that men with a low sperm count are more susceptible to illness.

The research found that they were more likely to have lower testosterone, higher body fat percentages, high blood pressure and more cholesterol.

Experts involved in the study suggested that men with low sperm counts should be tested for underlying health issues.

The study was conducted among Italian men to verify whether the quality of semen can be used as an indicator for a man's health.

The men with lower sperm counts were found to have a higher risk of developing diabetes, heart disease and stroke.

With the likelihood of lower testosterone, this led to reduced muscle mass and bone density which could lead to osteoporosis.

There was no cause and effect found between low sperm count and these health issues but they are linked.

Men being treated for infertility are advised to get checked for any additional issues since they have as increased chance of morbidity and mortality.
