According to BBC, a source close to the family also confirmed the death of the former Panama strongman to Associated Press (AP).

Varela in his tweet, said “The death of Manuel A. Noriega closes a chapter in our history; his daughters and their families deserve to bury him in peace.”

Noriega was removed from power by the United States troops when they invaded Panama.

He was arrested in France, and later on, in Panama for murder, corruption and embezzlement.

BBC reports that Noriega underwent an operation after suffering from a haemorrhage as a result of a brain surgery.

Manuel Antonio Noriega ruled Panama from 1983 to 1989.
