In a tweet posted after the arrest of Mr Itumbi, the Senate Majority leader dared the DCI to look into the claims of a letter with allegations of an assassination plot against Deputy President William Ruto.

"Arrest of Ole Itumbi is a strategy to divert attention from the La Mada meeting and plan. Was there a meeting? Did PS in charge of DCI say Ruto must be stopped Saitoti way?" the Senator posed.

"Who complained about the assassination? And to who? The authenticity of the allegations is more important than a letter," he added.

Flying Squad arrest Itumbi

Itumbi is was arrested on Wednesday by Flying Squad officers on Wednesday at City Hall, Nairobi over links to the Deputy President's "murder" letter.

Murkomens's remarks were echoed by Kericho Senator Aaron Cheruiyot who claimed that the DCI was trying to discredit the letter.

"DCI is working so hard to discredit the very serious allegations on a plot to eliminate William Samoei Ruto," the Kericho Senator said.

Cheruiyot asked whether the DCI had mistakenly summoned four Cabinet Senators who had been named in the letter.

Assassination plot

"Do they want us to believe that it is on account of a fake letter that 4 CS's went to DCI to record statements? Anyway... This too shall pass," he added.

Itumbi is the Secretary for Digital in the communications department at the office of the President but he is said to operate from DP Ruto's office.

Detectives over the weekend said probes were underway into the alleged “assassination plot” and they had narrowed down to two aides suspected to have generated and circulated the fake letter.
