Ezekiel Mutua tackles use of guns in Kenyan movies

Kenya Films and Classification Board (KFCB) CEO Ezekiel Mutua on Friday issued a comprehensive statement on the film licensing, in which he covered the use of guns in Kenyan movies.

Dr Mutua clarified that guns are licensed by the government of Kenya and not KFCB.

He further said that the use of guns as props in movies filmed in Kenya is the concern of the Inspector General of Police.

"Those wishing to use guns as props in a shoot are advised to seek approval directly from the IG.

"The Board does not grant such approvals neither are we obligated under the law to make such recommendations for filmmakers," he stated.

Film Licensing

In an apparent discussion of the recent Dusit Complex terrorist attack, Dr Mutua asked security authorities and police to assist in the crackdown against unlicensed filming in the country.

"Films can be used by criminals to gather information and navigate targeted spots. Illegal filming in public spaces must, therefore, not be allowed.

"In this regard, the Board appeals to the police and other security agencies to always monitor and scrutinize such activities and apprehend anyone operating without a license," Dr Mutua asked.

Dr Mutua's tenure at KFCB ended in November 2018 but was renewed for a second term of three years by the Board.
