Female MP narrates how she escaped being hacked with a jembe

Nominated Jubilee Member of Parliament Jeniffer Shamalla on Tuesday narrated to a court how she escaped a hacking attempt from her uncle Hosea Mosse Shamalla.

The legislator told the court that the incident took place in August 2018 and she only escaped because her bodyguard threatened Mosse with his gun.

Ms Shamalla had visited her father's grave in Musingu, Kakamega on August 18 and was inspecting it when her uncle approached with a hoe in hand.

"I was shocked when my bodyguard shouted a warning to him 'don’t you dare'. I had not seen him approaching me armed with a jembe and ready to attack.

"This forced my bodyguard to draw his gun, forcing the attacker to retreat," she narrated.

Shamallas feuding over land

The two are locked in a battle over the ownership of the land in which the MP's father, former civil servant Japhet Galagali Shamalla, and grandparents are buried.

"I was squarely on an ancestral land belonging to my father, a distinguished Permanent Secretary in the reign of the second President of Kenya.

"However, the same land Kakamega/Mugomari/1353 is currently registered under the accused person's [Mosse] name having acquired it fraudulently," she told Kakamega Senior Resident Magistrate Erick Malesi.

Ms Shamalla, who is an advocate of the High Court, further assured the court that her suit against her uncle is not motivated by any bad blood.

"The case before court is not motivated by any grudge between me and my uncle. Additionally, I am not of the view that we can reconcile any time soon since he has never approached me seeking to settle the same," she clarified.

Mosse was released from custody on a Sh50,000 bond as the case is set to be heard again on June 12.
