Matiang'i reveals the 3 major security issues in Mombasa

Interior Cabinet Secretary Fred Matiang'i on Tuesday gave a press statement on the three major security issues affecting the Coast region.

CS Matiang'i was accompanied by top security officials including Inspector General Joseph Boinnet as he outlined measures that he had instituted to curb the security threats.

According to the security bosses, Mombasa and other coast counties are grappling with low school enrollment for children, increased killings of the elderly and "disco matangas" that have become a front for criminal activities.

The CS conveyed that chiefs in the region will conduct door-to-door visits to ensure parents enroll their children in school, especially those who are supposed to join Form One.

2 Security Issues unique to the Coast Region

"Killing of the elderly is a challenge that is unique to the Coast region...it happens only here...there are those who try to give attribute it to culture but it is unacceptable," he narrated.

Matiang'i assured the public that security officials will work with community and religious leaders to curb the vice.

The CS also noted that "disco matanga" gatherings popular to the region had become a front for criminal agents.

"These started off as a noble, cultural way to keep vigil in homes where bereavement has happened but they have evolved into places where criminals sell and distribute illegal substances.

"We have agreed as the security team in the region that...anyone caught having their disco matangas past 11 p.m. will be arrested and prosecuted," he stated.
