Mr Wainaina said the programme was aimed at improving the general health of pupils and also class attendance in schools.

"It is my appeal to parents to start rearing chickens and become suppliers of eggs,” said Wainaina.

The lawmaker stated that the initiative would also act as a source of employment for parents apart from benefiting students.

The MP said a programme to help improve the falling education standards in Thika constituency would be launched soon.

Nutritional value

Eggs can be part of a nutritious breakfast, but the high cholesterol content of egg yolks makes it unwise to feed kids every day.

According to the American Heart Association, the buildup of arterial plaque begins in childhood, so kids who take in too much cholesterol are at an increased risk of developing heart disease as adults.

Although eggs every day may be excessive, eating protein-rich eggs for breakfast a few times a week can give kids lasting energy and help them retain their focus throughout the school day.

Protein increases tyrosine levels in kids' blood and brains, prompting their neurons to produce neurotransmitters that keep them alert and active, according to the Franklin Institute.
