DCI goes after Kakamega Hospital in twins swap saga

The Director of Criminal Investigations office says will still pursue the case of the identical Kakamega twins switched at birth.

The family of Sharon Mathias, Melon Lutenyo and Mevies Imbaya had said they will not press charges against the Kakamega County Referral hospital.

However, the DCI stated they had gathered substantial evidence against the Kakamega County Teaching and Referral Hospital and they would proceed with the case.

Kakamega County Teaching and Referral Hospital gave the DCI proof that the two mothers gave birth in the hospital, but it could not produce documents to show the mode of delivery, dates and other details.

Twins' family will not  press charges  

The decision not to press charges was one of the avenues to ensure peace and not to disrupt the studies of the three girls with numerous court appearances.

In April the DCI stated that “forensic investigations will establish if any criminal act was committed or if any mitigating circumstances led to the present status”.

The DCI is expected to establish how it all happened in a Kakamega hospital back in 1999 and hold those culpable to book.

Results confirmed

The results released on Saturday by Lancet Kenya, confirmed Sharon Mathius and Melon Lutenyo are twins.

According to the results, Rosemary Khaveleli Onyango is the biological mother of the twins.

The third girl, Melvis Imbaya who was raised by Onyango is not her biological daughter, with her DNA samples matching with those of Angeline Omina, the lady who raised one of the twins separated at birth.
