Chinese firm demands immediate payment of Sh22B from g'ovt

A Chinese company has demanded a Sh22 billion pay out after the termination of a Sh64 billion tender.

The company, ACEG-CATIC JV, had been contracted to conduct works at the Jomo Kenyatta International Airport (JKIA) by the Kenya Airports Authority (KAA).

The company had been awarded the tender to construct the Greenfield terminal but later it was determined that the allocation was done illegally, therefore, necessitating the cancellation.

"This claim has not been verified. My position as custodian of KAA who came to clean this illegal contract is that I want the money paid to the contractor (Sh4.3 billion) back.

"But the contractor’s position is quite opposite and therefore the need for negotiations," KAA managing director Johnny Andersen told MPs during a probe.

Governors and former Attorney General Githu Muigai

MPs from the Public Investment Committee (PIC) moved to summon a number of Governors and former government officials to elaborate on why the tender was canceled against the advise of the then Attorney General Githu Muigai.

The governors summoned are Meru governor Martin Wambora and his Nyandarua counterpart Francis Kimemia who was at the time the Head of Public Service.

Also summoned are Kipipiri MP Amos Kimunya and Banisa MP Hassan Kulow.
