Governor accuses party of Sh10m bribe pay-out

The feud between Alfred Mutua and the Wiper Party escalated further on Thursday after the Machakos Governor accused the party of paying Members of the County Assembly (MCAs) to impeach him.

On Wednesday, Ndalani Ward Rep Stephen Muthuka filed the impeachment motion accusing Mutua of breaching the Constitution, procurement laws and the County Government Act.

Key of the reasons cited in the impeachment motion include an alleged fictitious payment of Sh89 million for the desilting of the Maruba Dam, and the award of a contract for construction of access roads.

Mismanagement of funds

According to some of the MCAs, Mutua is also alleged to have mismanaged Sh600 million in the department of transport, roads and public works and making irregular purchases of vehicles by the county government.

However, Mutua said he won’t be cowed by the motion from the MCAs whom he called agents of “higher political forces”.

He pointed an accusing finger at top Wiper Party officials led by leader Kalonzo Muskoka claiming that they were part of the scheme to bring down his government.

“I can speak with authority that the Wiper Party has paid Sh10 million to MCAs to impeach me,” Mutua said in Kiusyani during his tour of Kitui County.

The Machakos County Assembly Speaker, Bernard Mung’ata, has given the governor seven days to respond to the allegations listed in the motion.

However, Wiper Organising secretary Robert Mbui rubbished Mutua’s claims as “total nonsense”.

He said Wiper has nothing to do with the impeachment motion since the Governor had declared he was no longer a member of the party.

The motion will be debated before the house starting next Wednesday.
