Alarming results after 161 Nairobians were screened for cancer at Mama Lucy Hospital

The Nairobi County Government has revealed findings after a free cancer screening exercise at the Mama Lucy Kibaki Hospital along Kangundo Road.

Out of the 161 men and women who turned up for screening between August 5 and August 7, eight were found to have signs of cancer.

87.5% of the 8 individuals were suspected to have prostrate cancer while 12.5% of the affected individuals were suspected to have breast cancer.

The doctors, however, noted that further tests needed to be done on the eight affected individuals to confirm the suspicions.

The screening exercise will be on until August 19, 2019 at the facility as well as at Mbagathi Hospital.

Sonko to pay for cancer treatment

The doctors are screening for prostrate, breast and cervical cancers, in the period in question, they did not find any suspected cases of cervical cancer.

Nairobi Governor Mike Sonko had promised to pay for treatment for all those found to have cancer from the screening exercise.

A recent report by the World Health Organization (WHO) indicated that close to 33,000 people succumb to cancer every year.

The government of Kenya has so far availed chemotherapy treatment options in seven county referral hospitals as a way to curb the number of deaths.
