Barcelona legend Xavi Hernandez recently discussed his consistent top-three finishes in the Ballon d'Or voting, asserting that he deserved at least a "Ballon de Bronze" recognition.
In an interview, the former Barcelona midfielder and manager emphasized his contributions to the team's success under Pep Guardiola, arguing that his influence warranted individual accolades. The four-time Champions League winner highlighted his third-place finishes in the Ballon d'Or from 2009 to 2011, a period considered a golden era for the club.
While acknowledging the exceptional talent of Lionel Messi and Cristiano Ronaldo, who dominated the award during that time, Xavi underscored his pivotal role in midfield, controlling the tempo and dictating play. In 2009, he finished behind Messi, who won his first Ballon d'Or, and Ronaldo. The following year saw an all-Barcelona podium, with Messi first, Andres Iniesta second, and Xavi third. He secured third place again in 2011, with Messi and Ronaldo maintaining their top two spots.
“The only thing I’d like is the Ballon de Bronze," Xavi stated. "Three times I’ve been the third-best player in the world… and from 2008 to 2012. I don’t consider myself a better footballer than Messi or Cristiano Ronaldo… I consider myself a playmaker who orchestrates the game. I don’t have the capacity to single-handedly win a match. What I have is the ability to build a way for the team to win. I’m very proud to have been there, and above all to have written history. The photo with my friends Iniesta and Messi is something historic. It’s amazing, I’ve surpassed my dreams.”
