Police have arrested at least 15 people following protests that rocked Nyali Bridge area in Mombasa County on Monday morning.

The protests were attended by legislators, among them Mvita MP Abdulswamad Nassir, who joined in condemning the failure to implement a government directive suspending ferrying of imported goods from the port via SGR alone.

The arrested civilians are believed to have been the activists who organized the protests.

The traders staged the protests after they were barred from resuming the courier services despite last week's order by Transport CS James Macharia which allowed them to resume business operations.

It's not immediately clear whether the demonstrations had been authorized or the protesters had turned rowdy, however, police lobbed teargas to disperse the growing crowds.
