Confusion in Kisumu after Nyong’o and Ranguma both declared winners

There was drama and confusion in Kisumu County early Wednesday morning after conflicting results were declared in the ODM gubernatorial race.

Incumbent Governor Jack Ranguma and Senator Anyang’ Nyong’o were both declared winners in the gubernatorial race at different tallying centres.

According to the first provisional results, Nyong’o was declared the winner by county returning officer Tom Okongo in Nyakach Constituency.

According to tose results, Nyong’o, garnered 164, 110 votes against Ranguma's 91,480 votes sparking massive celebrations by the Senator’s supporters.

Dr Hezron McObewa came in third with 62, 670 votes.

Ranguma swift response

However, shortly after that, Governor Ranguma hurriedly called a press conference flanked by the county’s deputy returning officer Richard Kiyondi at the Aga Khan Hall.

Kiyondi then declared Ranguma the official winner of the gubernatorial results.

“I am the legitimate person to announce the winner of the race because I have been fully involved in the process since it began,” Kiyondo said.

Kiyondo declared that Ranguma garnered 118, 934 votes against McObewa’s 47, 930.

According to Kiyondi, Nyong’o came in a distant third with 32,028 votes.

What puzzled many was that both Ranguma and Nyong'o each received the provisional ODM certificates.

The two bitter rivals after confidently declaring themselves winners, have now called on the ODM National  Elections Board to confirm their wins.
