The governor has continued to emphasize his commitment to challenge Senator James Orengo who won the seat during the 2017 General Election, without campaigning.

"I want to be Siaya's senator after my term in 2022. I still want to serve the people of Siaya and that is why I want to represent them in the Senate," he said.

The governor seems to be the odd one out among his second-term peers who have conveyed plans to contest for the presidency.

Governors seeking Upgrades

These include Hassan Joho (Mombasa), Wycliffe Oparanya (Kakamega), Alfred Mutua (Machakos) and Amason Kingi (Kilifi).

Makueni Governor Kivutha Kibwana has explicitly stated that he will not vie for president despite mounting calls from his supporters to vie for the seat.

The Constitution is clear that a governor and his deputy are only allowed to serve for two terms.

"A person shall not hold office as a county governor for more than two terms; or as a deputy county governor for more than two terms," reads Article 180 (7).

The Constitution, however, does not provide a term limit for Senators or MPs and MCAs.

According to the Standard, a number of deputy governors who are also serving their second and last terms are angling to take over form their bosses.

These include Dr Stanley Tarus (Trans Nzoia), Joash Maangi (Kisii), Daniel Chemno (Uasin Gishu) and Fatuma Achani (Kwale).
