Gretsa University in Thika now says it admitted Joho based on the strength of a degree awarded a university abroad.

The University’s Vice-Chancellor Kuria Thuo defended the decision to admit Joho saying the governor’s previous degree (Bachelor of Business Administration) awarded to him by Kampala University in Uganda had been recognised by the Commission for University Education (CUE) as required by the Universities Act.

According to Gretsa, Joho started his studies in 2014 under the Distance Learning Programme and finished in 2016.

Joho’s earlier degree he acquired from Kampala University in Uganda was disputed by the Uganda National Council of Higher Education the same year.

The minimum entry grade for entry into a Kenyan University is C+.

However Joho has admitted to scoring a D- (minus) grade in his KCSE examinations which he sat in 1993.

On Tuesday during an emotional press conference at his office in Mombasa, Joho publicly stated that scoring the low grade, he should be highlighted as an example that failure in Form Four is not a hindrance to future success.

Joho on Wednesday recorded a statement with the Directorate of Criminal Investigations (DCI) after the security agency summoned him over forgery claims of his certificates.

Joho is likely to be charged with forging his KCSE result slip for admission to the university.

Detectives at the DCI have said they are almost finalising the probe into how Joho gained entry into the university.
