Part of the youth was allied to area Governor Okoth Obado while the other faction was pro-Suna East MP Junet Mohamed and former Rongo MP Ochillo Ayacko, who is also a gubernatorial aspirant.

Police were overwhelmed and outnumbered by the rowdy youth who hurled stones at each other.

The convoy of Joho, Orengo and Mohamed were caught in the ensuing melee and pelted with stones near Governor Obado’s offices.

They had gone to open the ODM county office which Obado’s supporters were not happy with.

Petrol bomb

Tension had been high in Migori after unknown arsonists petrol bombed the ODM offices on Sunday night ahead of its official launch on Monday.

Governor Obado blamed the organisers of the rally led by Joho, Senators Anyang’ Nyong’o (Kisumu) and James Orengo (Siaya), of not informing him of the function in his own county.

The Governor tried to access the grounds at about 1pm but was blocked by youths who asked him to return to his office next to the stadium.

"This office is not going to be opened. We don’t want violence brewed outside Migori here," Obado said.

ODM youth leader Eric Opany claimed a senior politician in the county was behind the attack as he had been attempting to stop the function since Sunday evening.
