Awiti officially ditched Wiper Party citing fears the Mombasa Governor nominations may not be credible.

Awiti has been involved in a bitter feud with Mombasa Senator Hassan Omar over who will carry the Wiper Party ticket to battle it out with incumbent Governor Hassan Joho during the August elections.

The legislator is also the Wiper Party’s national treasurer.

Awiti had earlier accused the party hierarchy of trying to block him from facing the party's Secretary General Mr Omar in the party primaries.

Mr Awiti dismissed the endorsement of Mr Omar by some party officials as undemocratic and an act of cowardice.

“They have been planning to lock me out of Wiper (Party) and out of the Mombasa gubernatorial race. But let me tell them that no one can stop Awiti. I am in the race,” he told the media on Monday.

Chaotic meeting

Last week there was drama at a Mombasa hotel after supporters of Awiti were reportedly blocked from disrupting a meeting of Wiper aspirants.

The aspirants had convened to address the party's delayed nominations and the selection of a candidate to run against ODM's Hassan Joho and Jubilee's Suleiman Shahbal for the Mombasa governor's seat.

They were allegedly locked out of the meeting that was attended by aspirants allied to Wiper secretary general Hassan Omar.

However, Party leader Kalonzo Musyoka asked them to unite to increase Wiper’s chances of clinching the seat.

He downplayed the increased rivalry between the two leaders at his Vipingo home last week.
