According to police sources, the police officers were killed after an Improvised Explosive Device (IED) hit their Armoured Personnel Carrier in Baure, Lamu County.

The officers from Mangai  the Rapid Border Patrol Unit (RBPU) camp were heading to Mokowe for refuelling when the incident happened.

Police sources on the ground said military officers from Baure camp responded immediately but they were also attacked on the way to the scene by the militants.

2 other police officers from the entourage are missing following the attack.

Last week, the African extremist group Al-Shabab said it carried out three attacks in Somalia and Kenya that killed 16 people, nine of them being police and security officers.

The Inspector-General of police Joseph Boinnet had last week warned that a number of dangerous terrorists had sneaked into the country from Somalia.
