Things were in disarray and traffic almost came to a standstill after angry residents torched down a snazzy matatu plying the Lang’ata road route next to Deliverance church.

According to earlier reports, the matatu was burnt to smithereens after knocking down a child who was riding his bike opposite Uhuru gardens. But Ma3 route has counteracted these reports.

According to the traffic web and SMS platform, the matatu was burnt after it knocked down an adult cyclist and not a child as earlier reported.

This is not the first time that a Rongai matatu has been on the news for all the wrong reasons. Last year, a Rongai Matatu called ‘Catalyst’ ran over a man who had fallen after hanging from the bus, leaving his innards on the tarmac. This tragic incident came after the Matatu had won first prize during the Nganya awards at K.I.C.C thwarting the celebrations.

Earlier in the year, another Rongai matatu killed a Multimedia University student and left others injured after rolling due to speed.

Despite the catastrophic news often associated with the flashy Rongai Matatus there are a few things to celebrate with this Matatus as they are the embodiment of cultural expression with their colourful graffiti and over-the top yet glamorous insides.

The ill-fated Catalyst matatu was also the one that transported and greatly impressed American singer Trey Songz when he jetted into the country for Coke Studio Africa last year.
