But amid the sombre gathering, mourners witnessed something unexpected.

As he thanked those who had stood with him during the difficult period, the outspoken senator slowly shifted from public gratitude to deeply personal reflection, offering a rare glimpse into the family life he has largely kept away from the political spotlight.

What began as a traditional mourning gathering soon turned into a candid conversation about family, caregiving and the people who had stood closest to him during one of the hardest moments of his life.

A rare personal confession

Known publicly for his strong political opinions and vocal presence in television debates, Onyonka surprised many when he openly spoke about the size and structure of his family.

My children are actually 12. Yes. And their mothers are known.

The remarks were delivered calmly and without hesitation, reflecting a man who appeared less concerned with public perception and more focused on acknowledging the people who form part of his personal world.

Yet it was his next revelation that drew even greater attention.

Confirming a relationship long kept private

During the gathering, Onyonka publicly confirmed that former Independent Electoral and Boundaries Commission commissioner Roselyn Akombe is his wife.

What I know many of you don’t know is that Roselyn Akombe is my wife.

The revelation immediately drew interest because both figures have remained prominent in public life for years, even as details of their relationship stayed largely out of public discussion.

According to the senator, the bond between the two women, his mother and Akombe was strong and deeply personal.

A caregiver during difficult years

As he reflected on his mother’s final years, Onyonka spoke emotionally about the role Akombe played in caring for her.

He revealed that Akombe was actively involved in overseeing his mother’s treatment and wellbeing, including facilitating medical trips to the United States for specialised care.

“If you see those pictures, you’ll see her with my mom. In fact, she was treating her. She would take her to the US,” he said.

Akombe rose to international prominence in 2017 after resigning from the IEBC ahead of the repeat presidential election, citing concerns over the integrity of the electoral process.

Since then, she has worked with international organisations, including the United Nations.

Onyonka, meanwhile, has built a reputation as one of the country’s outspoken political voices, first as Member of Parliament for Kitutu Chache and later as senator for Kisii County.
